If you’re planning a tailgating party before Saturday’s Panthers game, don’t forget to recycle.

Last season, Panthers fans diverted 30 percent of their tailgate party waste from landfills by recycling bottles and cans. Officials this year hope to increase that total by 16 percent – to 35 tons.

Also new this year, the program will be expanded to more uptown lots, and tailgaters for the first time are being asked to recycle clean cardboard.

The program will work much the same as last year: Tailgaters will receive a yellow recycling bag as they enter their usual parking lot. Before heading into the stadium, they are instructed to leave bags (and collapsed cardboard if not in the bag) at the curb to be picked up by Charlotte's Special Services teams.

City officials estimate that tailgating generates close to 10 tons of waste on most game days.
