A man was shot to death in east Mecklenburg County Wednesday night following an apparent altercation.

Police today identified the victim as 23-year-old William Britton Twitty.

Arrested and charged with murder in the case was Barry Dean Long, 44.

The shooting took place in the 9200 block of Kem Arbor Way just before 11 p.m.

When officers from the Hickory Grove division arrived at the scene, they found Twitty lying in a parked vehicle suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. Mint Hill paramedics pronounced him dead.

Based on an initial witness statement to police, Twitty and Long were involved in an altercation just before the shooting. Police said Long was still at the scene when officers arrived and was cooperating with homicide detectives.

Police said they recovered a gun.
