Arrest made in child abuse case
Charlotte-Mecklenburg police arrested 22-year-old Shannon Merriman Wednesday
morning shortly after 1 a.m. and charged her with child abuse inflicting serious injury. Merriman was arrested at Carolinas Medical Center, where her one-year-old child was admitted for treatment after she called 911 Sunday saying the toddler had slipped and hit his head. Homicide Unit Detectives were notified and took command of the investigation from the outset. Their investigation led them to secure a warrant for Merriman’s arrest. She is currently in the custody of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office, where she is being held without bond.

Suspect arrested in Georgia
Police say a Charlotte man who cut off his court-ordered electronic monitoring device and left the state was arrested in Gwinnett County Georgia.
Damion Dawston had been on CMPD’s electronic monitoring since his June 9, 2011, release from jail. In addition to facing charges for interfering with an electronic monitoring device, Dawson is also being charged with felony breaking and entering, larceny after breaking and entering, and felony possession of stolen goods.
The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department has monitored more than 700 offenders in 2011, and Dawston is the fourteenth offender to cut the monitor off. On average, fewer than 2 percent of the offenders being monitored ever cut the monitors off.
Police thanked tipsters for helping them get Dawson off the streets and back in the custody of law enforcement.
