Charlotte-Mecklenburg police have made an arrest in the Friday morning shooting death
of hospital executive Robert Barber in south Charlotte.
Police say an 18-year-old, Chauncey Sterling, was arrested Sunday evening in Rock Hill.
Police in Charlotte described the case Monday morning as a "murder and robbery" and said the suspect, Sterling, was taken into custody shortly after 10 p.m. in the 200 block of Fargo Street in Rock Hill. CMPD says its detectives were helped by Rock Hill police and the York County Sheriff's Office in making the arrest.
Officer Robert Fey, a spokesman for CMPD, says Sterling remains in a York County jail Monday morning, awaiting extradition to Charlotte.
Fey said homicide detectives "developed information" Sunday which led them to Sterling as a suspect. Investigators got warrants Sunday and determined during the day where they might find him.
Barber, who worked with Carolinas HealthCare, was shot to death about 10:15 a.m. Friday on Mullens Ford Road, in the Foxcroft East neighborhood off Carmel Road. That is about a mile east of SouthPark Mall, in a part of Charlotte where such crimes are rare.
Barber, 64, was headed home from Caribou Coffee on Fairview Road, where he had stopped with his wife, Deborah, before she drove to work and he decided to walk, according to reports.
He was shot about two miles from his home, police said.
Police worked throughout the weekend, interviewing neighbors and employees at the Caribou Coffee shop, among others. They released few details during the investigation, except to provide a description of the suspect -- a thin black male about 6 feet 2 inches tall with a short haircut. He was last seen wearing dark pants and a black-and-white plaid shirt or jacket.
