A plan to build subsidized housings in affluent Ballantyne is dead.

Republic Development Group, which proposed building 86 low-income units at Johnston Road and Providence Road West, said Tuesday that it had abandoned the controversial project.

On Monday, the Charlotte Housing Authority also walked away, citing financial concerns.

Ballantyne residents had fiercely opposed the units on grounds that they would add to overcrowding in schools and roads and possibly lead to more crime.

But according to the Charlotte Observer, the plan also may have been doomed by an internal investigation within CHA.

Two CHA executives left under pressure more than a week ago, the newspaper reported, after it was revealed that one of them was a business partner with the private developers.
