Barnes to run for D.A.'s office
Charlotte City Councilman Michael D. Barnes say he will run this fall to be elected
Mecklenburg County district attorney.
The Democrat is serving his third term on City Council and has practiced law or 10 years.
If elected, he said in a statement Monday, he would convene leaders from around the county to explore ways to address some of the challenges facing the DA’s office. Perhaps the biggest problem facing the office is a budget that some have called insufficient to keep up with Charlotte’s population growth.
“It is imperative that we elect a district Attorney with leadership experience, a compelling vision and absolute objectivity,” Barnes said. “If elected, I will continue to work to prosecute criminals and also to ensure that resources are in place to allow the DA’s office to effectively do its job.”
A native of Rocky Mount, N.C., Barnes received his undergraduate degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and received his law degree from North Carolina Central University. He and his wife Keisha have three children.
On City Council, Barns represents District 4. He chairs the Budget Committee and vice-chairs the Transportation and Planning Committee. He is also a member of the Housing and Neighborhood Development Committee and Council representative to the University City Partners.
