Black farmers could lose settlement
A $1.25 billion deal to settle discrimination lawsuits with black farmers is about to miss a key deadline, leaving the farmers angry with President Obama, according to Reuters News Agency.
The settlement was to compensate black farmers left out of federal farm loan and assistance programs due to racism, but according to the story, the settlement was contingent on Congress approving $1.15 billion in funding by March 31. The settlement became uncertain when Congress left for a two-week break on Friday - without approving the deal.
A spokesman for the National Black Farmers Association expressed disappointment.
"The president made a strong commitment to show leadership to get this done, and basically we haven't seen him show that leadership," John Boyd Jr. is quoted as saying. Boyd is the head of the farmers’ group.
