Black unemployment at 16 percent in September
The unemployment rate for African Americans held essentially steady last month, dipping from 16.7 percent to 16 percent – but still well above the rate for whites (8 percent).
The nation’s overall unemployment rate was unchanged in September at 9.1 percent, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today.
Employers added 103,000 jobs in September, a modest increase after a sluggish summer. Nearly half of the gains last month were due to the rehiring of 45,000 striking Verizon employees.
On Thursday, President Obama urged Congress to pass his job-creation proposal, which he called an insurance plan against a return to recession. The president said hiring and growth will be weaker without his nearly $450 billion package of tax cuts and public works spending.
