Police on Wednesday retrieved a woman's body from the Catawba River west of Charlotte-Douglas International Airport.

Belmont police say the woman's clothes match the description of clothes belonging to 56-year-old Janet Simpson, who disappeared Dec. 5, the Charlotte Observer reported.

Simpson, a mortgage broker, was last seen leaving the Liberty East Restaurant on East Independence Boulevard. Her car was discovered days later on Parkdale Drive in Belmont, not far from the Catawba River.

Authorities retrieved the body after a homeowner found it floating in the water behind his home on Amos Smith Road.

The body was taken to the Mecklenburg County medical examiner’s office for an autopsy.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call 704-432-TIPS and speak directly to a homicide detective or call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
