The Charlotte Observer, quoting its news partner WCNC-TV, said the bullet it a wall.
Police did not release the boy’s name because he is a minor. State law doesn't allow students under age 14 to be expelled, the Observer reported, but the boy could be given an alternative assignment.
The gun reportedly was a .22-caliber pistol.
The juvenile was charged with possession of a weapon on school grounds and was taken to the Gaston Regional Juvenile Detention Center.
Detectives on Tuesday were still truing to determine where and how the boy got the gun. Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
