A street jam to aid the homeless
If you see a group of teenage musicians playing for cash in uptown Charlotte this week, be generous – they’ll be raising money for charity.
The students, all members of Myers Park High School, are “buskers” (street musicians)
and their charity of choice will be the Urban Ministries Center, which aids the city's homeless residents.
The three-day fundraiser, call “Busk Till Dusk,” will start Thursday and end Saturday. Musicians will play from 4 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. (thus, the name) on several blocks along Tryon Street.
Miller Morrow (photo), a senior at Myers Park, said he came up with the idea, in part, because he wants to see more street musicians in Charlotte. Plus, he said, he wanted to find a way to help the homeless.
“I have a lot of musician friends, and I am a musician myself,” he told Qcitymetro.com. “We were just talking about busking in charlotte and how there’s not much busking here. So I thought, why not busk to benefit somebody?”
Morrow said his diverse group of musicians will range in genre from bluegrass to funk to reggae.
"Music is important to people... it colors the day," he said. "We hope to make something come of the music we like to play, and helping Urban Ministries Center is definitely worth the effort."
