Using a $300,000 gift from Cato Corp., the Arts & Science Council (ASC) will establish two endowments to recognize exceptional teachers in the areas of arts, science and history.

ASC’s Cato Excellence in Teaching Award each year will recognize three creative teachers beginning spring 2011. Each will receive a $1,500 award.

Applications will be available Dec. 1 on the website ArtsAndScience.org. The deadline to apply is Jan. 31, 2011. Finalists and recipients will be announced during ASC’s annual Impact + Investment event in July.

In addition to the annual award, ASC’s Cato Lifetime Achievement in Teaching Award will recognize three teachers in arts, science and history every three years. Each recipient will receive $5,000.

Applicants for the awards must teach in grades Pre-K - 12 at a public or independent school in Mecklenburg, Gaston, Iredell, Lincoln or Union counties in N.C. or Lancaster or York counties in S.C.
