CATS chief named outstanding business woman
Carolyn Flowers, CEO of the Charlotte Area Transit System, has been named 2011 Outstanding Business Woman by the Charlotte Business Journal.
The award is given each year to professional women who have lead special projects, developed new products and helped their business stand out among others.
The Business Journal listed Flowers among the 25 most influencial business women. She will receive the award today at the 15th annual Women in Business Achievement Awards at the Charlotte Convention Center.
Flowers has almost 20 years experience working for transit agencies including CATS and Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro).
"In my transit career, my biggest motivator is being able to contribute to the community and deliver a safe, reliable and expanded transit network," Flowers said. "Maintaining an ongoing dialogue with our stakeholders and knowing there is always something to learn on this journey helps me do the best job I can each day."
Within less than 16 months of arriving at CATS, Flowers has secured support from Washington, D.C. for the LYNX Blue Line Extension, garnered several visits to Charlotte by Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood and sought new funding sources for the organization through advertising.
Flowers additionally revamped the long-term regional transportation plan, which allowed for the advancement of two major corridors by reducing the project scope of the BLE by $200 million and seeking private public partnerships for the advancement of the Red Line commuter rail.
