Charles Woodyard, who has led the Charlotte Housing Authority (CHA) since 2002, is leaving to accept the top post with the Chicago Housing Authority.
Woodyard announced his departure to the CHA board of commissioners on Wednesday. The Chicago Housing Authority is expected to announce his hiring on Thursday.
CHA will hire an interim president/CEO until a more permanent replacement is named, said Joel D. Ford, who chairs the Charlotte authority’s board.
“Under Charles’ leadership, the CHA has become nationally recognized as an innovative, aggressive and financially strong community partner that provides housing to Charlotte’s working poor, elderly, disabled and others who need supportive housing in safe and attractive units in 50 communities across the city,” Ford said in a statement. “We are seeking a leader who will build on this foundation and embrace the authority’s vision of becoming a true partner in helping residents achieve the self-sufficiency skills they need to ‘graduate’ from CHA housing.”
Woodyard has worked in local government for the past 28 years. Before joining the housing authority he was in the Charlotte city manager’s office.
A CHA spokeswoman said Woodyard was not immediately available for comment.
