Charlotte-Mecklenburg schools will be closed Monday
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools will be closed on Monday, Feb. 1, district officials announced late Sunday.
Although many roads are clear of snow and ice, CMS officials said some secondary roads remain icy and unsafe for travel.
"Safety of our students and staff is our number one priority," CMS chief Peter Gorman said in a statement. "Because this is such a large county sometimes there are weather issues in some parts and none in other areas."
CMS teachers will have an optional workday.
In addition, all after-school activities (tutorials, PTA meetings and athletic events and contests) will be canceled. The CMS After School Enrichment Program (ASEP) will not be in operation Feb. 1. CMS new-employee orientation and all professional development activities are also canceled. The mid-year graduations that were scheduled for Feb. 1 at Bojangles Coliseum have been rescheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 2, at 5 and 6:30 p.m.
CMS employees are encouraged to use good judgment in making the decision to report to work.
Gorman said he will recommend to the school board that Feb. 15 be used as a make-up day.
