Chicago discriminaton lawsuit has echoes of Charlotte case
It seems Charlotte isn’t the only city with a high-profile court case alleging racial discrimination at a popular nightspot.
In Lincoln Park, Ill., just outside of Chicago, the former manager of Fuze (formerly known as Skybar) has filed a federal lawsuit alleging that she was fired after refusing to enforce the owner’s demand to limit the number of American Americans admitted to the club.
Camila Klinger, 27, alleges in her lawsuit that club owner Anthony Anton routinely instructed her to restrict black admission to the club, saying at times that certain events were “too dark.”
This from the Chicago Sun-Times:
Among other things, Klinger’s suit alleges that Anton’s discriminatory practices included: Telling her that there were too many black people in the club; ordering her to tell the DJs to stop playing African-American music so black patrons would leave, and raising the club’s cover charge and cost for party packages for black customers so they would choose to go elsewhere.
“Anton made it clear to Klinger that certain racial minority groups, particularly African Americans, were not welcome in the club,’’ the suit states.
“Something inside of me felt that this was not acceptable in any form,” [she told a Tribute columnist]. “I felt like I had to speak out. A lot of people see things, they witness things and they don’t have the means and resources to bring some kind of awareness. I feel like the only way for good to come out of this is if I expose this.”
Here in the Qcity, Agnew, a graduate of Florida A&M University, was ejected from the uptown EpiCentre and arrested on trespassing charges after he refused as security guard’s demand that he straighten the cap he was wearing. Agnew says EpiCentre management routinely uses dress codes to single out African American males.
EpiCentre officials have denied multiple requests for comment.
Agnew's next court appearance is scheduled for Sept. 28.
