Church break-in leads to fugitive arrest
A break-in at an east Charlotte church has led to the arrest of a 39-year-old fugitive who
police say cut off his electronic monitor on Wednesday.
An employee reporting to work Thursday at Briar Creek Road Baptist Church found a white, male intruder at 6:39 a.m., along with a busted-out rear window.
The suspect fled but was caught by police a short time later.
Police identified the suspect as Larry Cooper, a.k.a., Gary Cooper.
According to police, Cooper cut off his electronic monitor December 15, just hours after being released from jail after serving three months on breaking and entering charges.
He now faces charges of tampering with an electronic monitoring device and damage to property, in addition to new charges related to the church break-in.
A CMPD spokesman said the department would ask the court to revoke Cooper’s bonds.
Cooper was the 20th person to cut off a CMPD electronic monitor in 2010, which is less than 2 percent of all offenders monitored by CMPD. All who cut off their monitors have been captured.
