City Council votes against censuring Warren Turner
Warren Turner, accused of making sexually inappropriate comments to women employed by the city, will not be censured by his City Council colleagues.
In a 6-3 vote Monday, council rejected a motion to censure the west Charlotte council member.
Turner has denied all allegations.
At Monday’s council meeting, Turner defended himself against a city investigation that found reason to believe five women who alleged inappropriate conduct. The investigation’s final report concluded that Turner was “less than fully truthful when responding to questions."
Turner said the investigation, led by Charlotte attorney Valecia McDowell, subjected him to "humiliation and unfairness" and was "filled with untruths, half-truths and inconsistencies."
"Let me make it clear," he said. "I take my position very seriously: My fatherhood, my deaconhood, my integrity.”
Voting to censure Turner were: Council members Susan Burgess, Michael Barnes and Nancy Carter.
Voting against censure were: Council members James Mitchell, Patrick Cannon, David Howard, Patsy Kinsey, Warren Cooksey and Andy Dulin.
Council member Edwin Peacock left the meeting early and didn't vote.
Turner, who is married and serves as a deacon at Silver Mount Baptist Church, has represented west Charlotte since 2003.
