A Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officer shot and wounded a robbery suspect overnight outside a Wendy’s restaurant in the 4300 block of Park Road.
Police did not immediately release the suspect’s name but said the incident happened sometime around 1:39 a.m. Friday.
Based on preliminary reports, officers from the Westover division responded to a call for service at the fast-food restaurant in reference to a robbery in progress. A Wendy’s manager had heard a commotion coming from the counter area and dialed 911.
Multiple patrol units responded. The first officer on scene, Orville Payne III, encountered a suspect armed with a handgun leaving the back of the store, the police report stated. Payne fired his service weapon, striking the suspect at least once in the left thigh.
The suspect was taken to Carolinas Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.
A second subject was taken to police headquarters for questioning.
Police said they recovered a handgun as well as cash stolen during the robbery.
Payne, hired by CMPD on September 14, 2009, was placed on administrative leave with pay pending an internal investigation, a standard procedure in officer-involved shootings.
