CMPD: Security at Charlotte airport inadequate

A long-awaited, heavily redacted report evaluating security at Charlotte's airport says its police force is inadequate to properly monitor the nation's 11th-busiest airport.

The report by the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department follows an investigation by several agencies into how a high school sophomore ended up in the wheel well of a Boeing 737 bound for Boston.

The report concludes that Delvonte Tisdale might have boarded US Airways Flight 1176 while the plane sat idle at an undisclosed location for 37 minutes as it waited to take off.

In a survey of eight comparable airports, the report found that police staffing at Charlotte/Douglas International Airport ranked next to last. The six-page report recommends beefing up staff and possibly adding electronic monitoring.
