CMS adds nearly 2,000 students
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools added nearly 2,000 students in the 2010-2011 school year, district officials said Tuesday.
The enrollment count, taken on the 20th day of class, showed 135,638 students in grades k-12 – up 1,974 over the previous year.
The district had an additional 3,169 students enrolled in pre-kindergarten classes.
“Although enrollment growth has slowed, CMS is still continuing to grow each year,” said Scott McCully, executive director of student placement. “We anticipated growing this year, but not quite this much. Our total K-12 enrollment is 687 students more than we projected during the summer.”
Although enrollment fluctuates during the year, CMS generally uses the 20th-day count as the official enrollment figure for the year.
Here is a breakdown by race in grades K-12:
- African American -- 41 percent (55,801)
- White -- 33 percent (44,487)
- Hispanic -- 16 percent (22,221)
- Asian/Pacific Islander -- 5 percent
- Multi-racial -- 4 percent
- American Indian – less than 1 percent.
