Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools officials confirmed Friday that they've sent out layoff notices to employees in four departments this week.
Superintendent Peter Gorman had sent an email to all 18,200 CMS employees telling them the letters would be going out soon. On Friday, CMS said letters went out to employees in the departments of curriculum and instruction, human resources, auxiliary services and accountability.
The layoff notices covered 52 employees' positions, a CMS spokeswoman said. An unspecified number of unfilled positions were frozen, she added, as will happen throughout the ongoing layoff process.
The laid-off employees will work through the end of June. They will have the option to apply for 25 newly reorganized jobs that will remain in the affected departments after the layoffs, CMS said.
The available jobs will be posted on Monday.
CMS has said it needs to cut about 1,500 jobs, including 600 teaching positions, to help close a $100 million budget gap. School board members have indicated they plan to ask county commissioners for $55 million to help save jobs and the Bright Beginnings preschool program.
