CMS will restore 141 teacher positions
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools will restore 141 teaching positions because state lawmakers did not cut CMS funding as much as expected.
In its budget planning, CMS had anticipated that the district would have to increase class sizes by two students. But based on preliminary state funding for 2010-2011, the actual increase will be one student per class.
The additional teachers will be added before classes start next month, CMS said.
“We’re pleased to be able to have more teachers than we expected,” Superintendent Peter Gorman said in a statement.
Not every one of the districts 178 schools will get an additional teacher.
Based on a worst-case scenario, school officials had anticipated 1,034.75 job cuts, with 580 of them teaching positions. The cuts were spread across elementary, middle and high schools, and affected employees were notified in the late spring and summer.
As final decisions are made to recall teachers, the district may post job openings on its Web site, www.cms.k12.nc.us.
So far, CMS has received $602.6 million in state funding for 2010-2011. Additional state money is anticipated after school begins.
