Council votes pay raise for city manager
Charlotte City Manager Curt Walton is getting a pay raise -- nearly 4 percent – thanks to a Monday night vote by City Council.
Walton's base salary last year was $200,312, but with a bonus and car allowance, his
total compensation rose to roughly $226,000.
Council voted 6-5 to give him a flat salary, which includes bonus money and an allowance. Walton had lobbied the council for more money, insisting that he was underpaid relative to counterparts in other cities.
Voting for the increase were Democrats Nancy Carter, Patsy Kinsey, David Howard, James Mitchell, Jason Burgess and Republican Edwin Peacock.
Voting against the pay hike were Republicans Andy Dulin and Warren Cooksey, and Democrats Michael Barnes, Warren Turner and Patrick Cannon.
Mayor Anthony Foxx said he did not agree with the pay raise but was quoted in the Charlotte Observe as saying he would not veto it.
“…There are certain issues that belong to the full council,” Foxx said. “This is one of them."
