Democrats preparing for the 2012 convention have hired a chief diversity officer to assist with issues ranging from employment to contracting.
Greg Hinton, who has worked for several private-sector companies, will serve as the first chief diversity officer for the Democratic National Committee (DNC) and Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (NCCC). He also will advise the Democratic National Convention Committee (DNCC) on diversity staffing and minority procurement.
Hinton will be based in Washington and will begin his new job on Oct. 24.
“This position grew out of the Democratic Party’s ongoing efforts to make sure that the party – from employment to procurement and contracting - reflects the diversity of our country,” the various organizations said in a joint statement Monday.
Hinton, a native of Chicago, will be leaving his role as chief diversity officer of US Cellular.
DNC Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz said he party “has long been dedicated to including talented people who reflect the diversity of our great country.” The new hire, she said, will “make sure we are living up to that commitment.”
The position grew out of a recommendation earlier this year by the DNC’s Budget and Finance Committee.
Hinton said in a statement Monday that the new position is "a reflection of the party’s strong commitment to diversity and inclusion.”
"Our party is stronger because of our diversity," he said, "and in this new role I will be working to make sure we are harnessing our diverse experiences and points of view in the most effective way possible."
