If you had a Bank of America debit card between January 2001 and May 2011, you may be receiving a check in the mail or an automatic credit (if you are still an account holder) from the bank.

Monday, a federal judge approved a $410 million settlement in a class-action lawsuit against the Charlotte-based bank. The settlement, one of the largest ever in a consumer case, affects more than 13 million Bank of America customers who were charged debit card overdraft fees over the past decade.

The average customer in this case, was charged $300 in overdraft fees, making them eligible for a $27 award - less than the cost of the average $35 overdraft fee.

Through the settlement, customers will receive a minimum of 9 percent of the fees they paid. The 32 original-named plaintiffs, who represented the larger class, will also get bonuses of up to $5,000 each or $2,500 each if both plaintiffs are a married couple

Those who are eligible to receive payment under the settlement do not have to take any action or fill out any paperwork.

Some customers have objected to the deal because they say the bank is only paying back less than 10 percent of the estimated $4.5 billion it collected from overdraft fees.
