The university said Yancy agreed to remain in the post for up to two years. She held the post of interim president at Shaw from June 2009 until September 2010, when McClaurin was named.
Yancy also served 14 years as president of Johnson C. Smith University. While there, she ran two successful capital campaigns and raised over $145 million for the school. She also increased JCSU’s endowment from $14 million to $53 million.
Yancy returns to Shaw during an especially difficult time. The Raleigh university was heavily damaged by a tornado in April. The school also is in the process of seeking re-accreditation, which is critical for federal funding.
“The Shaw family is excited about the prospect of having Dr. Yancy come back to lead us through the SACS (Southern Association of Colleges and Schools) re-accreditation and beyond,” Shaw Board of Trustees Chairman Willie Gary said in a statement shortly after the governing body voted to bring Yancy back. “There is jubilation in the air and excitement all over campus.”
We’ve had a great faculty and staff meeting and we all look forward to an outstanding 2011-2012 academic year.”
Gary also thanked those who had helped the school since the tornado.
“We are up and running and starting classes on schedule,” he said.
The school’s fall semester began Wednesday.
