Here is what’s brewing in the news this morning:

Feds will not prosecute after teen beaten by police

Jordan Miles says he was brutally beaten by three undercover Pittsburgh police officers. It happened one night in January of 2010. It was the day after his 18th birthday. and Miles was walking between his mother's and grandmother's houses.

The officers said they confronted Miles because he appeared to be "sneaking around" a house with a heavy object in his coat that they thought was a concealed weapon. Miles said the officers never identified themselves when they ordered him to stop. He said he ran because he thought he was being robbed or abducted.

The object in his pocket was later identified as a Mountain Dew bottle. Miles was beaten and charged with a string of crimes, including assault and resisting arrest, which were later dismissed by a district judge.

Miles’ family says he was hospitalized after being hit with a stun gun and suffered head lacerations. Chunks of his hair had also been pulled from his head.

The federal government has been investigating the case for over a year. The involved officers, who have been suspended with pay, will not be charged. This week, the U.S. Department of Justice announced it has closed its investigation saying "federal officials concluded that there was insufficient evidence to prove beyond a reasonable doubt" that the officers violated the teen's civil rights.

"They're vindicated," said Dan O’Hara the president of the city’s Fraternal Order of Police. "This was a good day for the officers and for the department. The system works. It leaves very little to the imagination that these guys were doing what they were trained to do."

Al Qaeda planned attack on U.S. railways

The Associated Press is reporting that information taken from Osama bin Laden's compound in Pakistan indicates that al Qaeda was planning attacks on a handful of U.S. cities, timed to significant dates, a U.S. official said.

The plot involved derailing trains in the United States by placing obstructions on tracks over bridges and valleys. It was to be executed later this year, coinciding with the 10th anniversary of the September 11, 2001, attacks.

Material gathered from the same compound also suggests that al Qaeda was particularly interested in striking Washington, New York, Los Angeles and Chicago, according to the official. U.S. authorities have found that al Qaeda appears especially interested in striking on significant dates like July 4, Christmas and the opening day of the United Nations.
