Charlotte City Council member Anthony Foxx will return to West Charlotte High School, his alma mater, to officially launch his campaign for mayor.

The official announcement is scheduled for early evening on April 16.

Earlier that day, Foxx will travel to various parts of the city -- Ballantyne, Center City, East Charlotte, University City and West Charlotte -- to highlight what he hopes will be a diverse and inclusive campaign, said Bruce Clark, campaign manager.

Many of the stops will focus on jobs, neighborhoods and the economy, Clark said, adding that other elected officials will likely join Foxx at some stops.

“The economy and job creation will always be a top priority,” Clark said “It’s what’s on everybody’s mind. But we think it’s really important for people to know that....we care not only about the jobs but we care also about the neighborhoods where these jobs are going to go.”

Details are incomplete, Clark said, but preliminary plans call for Foxx to hold a small business forum in south Charlotte and visit a research center in the University City area. Each stop, he said, would be symbolic of an issue Foxx would highlight as mayor.

“The idea we want is for people to look at the entire day as a connected series of events, not one event,” he said. “It’s designed to bring out a lot of different emotions.”

The day will culminate with the official announcement at West Charlotte High, where Foxx received a diploma in 1989. The program will begin about 5: 30 p.m. -- just in time for the evening news.
