Fraternity awards scholarships to high school students
Next year, 11 high school students in the Charlotte Area will receive some assistance paying for college. They were chosen as recipients of scholarships through the Alpha Phi Alpha
Fraternity Beautillion program.
This year's awards totalled more than $13,000 and were sponsored by the Beta Nu Lambda Foundation.
"The Beautillion is an opportunity for us to help support the educational dreams of our youth," said T. Brian George, president of Beta Nu Lambda Chapter. "It also showcases some of Charlotte's finest young men who have demonstrated a desire to excel in life."
Since 2007, the scholarship program has invested more than $40,000 toward the college education of Charlotte-area minority students.
Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. members also served as mentors for the scholarship recipients throughout the 2010-11 school year. As participants in the fraternity's Alpha Academy Leadership Program, the young men worked to develop skills in the areas of leadership, public speaking, career exploration, business etiquette, investing and dressing for success among others.
