Former Mayor Pat McCrory caused a stir recently when he suggested that Mayor Anthony Foxx and Patrick Cannon, the city's mayor pro tem, lead by example when it comes to public schools.

McCrory said too many of Charlotte’s business leaders and politicians send their children to private schools, which skews the racial and economic makeup of public schools, and he mentioned in particular Foxx and Cannon.

Foxx's oldest child attends Charlotte Country Day. Cannon's two children attend Charlotte Christian. Both Foxx and Cannon are African-American.

Cannon said McCrory’s remarks were “below the belt.”

QUESTION: Did the former mayor have a valid point? Do middle- and upper-income African Americas have a social obligation to keep their children in public schools?
