CMPD is collecting used cell phones
The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department is collecting used cell phones (in any condition). The phones are sent to a recycling center in Florida and the money made from the phones will go directly to the Battered Women’s Shelter. This is the second year for the project. Each division office will have a box located in the lobby for cell phone drop off between the hours of 8 a.m. and 4 p.m., Monday-Friday.

Actors wanted for faith-based musical
Newcomer playwright S. Kristi Douglas is searching for local actors to fill roles in her theatrical production of “Daughter of the King: The Musical,” which will premier next year. Auditions will be held Saturday, Jan. 21, 2012 and Saturday, Jan. 28, 2012 from 10 a.m. -1 p.m. by appointment only. Douglas is auditioning for the roles of Renee, Ophelia and Deanna King-Reyes (three close-knit adult sisters); Sister Norital (a comedic, trouble-making church member), and The Reverend (a goodly pastor). The roles of Renee, Ophelia and Deanna must be strong vocalists with the ability to “move.” Simple choreography is required. No formal dance training is required, however. Also seeking strong vocalists (adult or young adult) to sing in a choir which will perform with the actors. No acting or choreography is required for the choir. “Daughter of the King: The Musical” is a benefit performance for Dove’s Nest and My Sister’s House and debuts on Mother’s Day, Sunday, May 13, 2012. Church gives checks to 3 schools
C.N. Jenkins Memorial Presbyterian Church this week gave $1,500 to three schools affiliated with the Presbyterian denomination. Barber Scotia College, Johnson C. Smith Theological Seminary and Johnson C. Smith University each received $500 checks during the 11 a.m. Sunday worship service. Senior Pastor Jerry Cannon has served on the boards of trustees at Barber Scotia and Johnson C. Smith Theological Seminary. He currently serves on the board of the Interdenominational Theological Center in Atlanta, where Johnson C. Smith Theological Seminary is housed.

Crime Stoppers program has "historic year"
The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Crime Stoppers program received more than 1,750 tips in 2011 – information that led to roughly 225 arrests. Individuals arrested ranged from suspected property thieves to suspected murderers. The program also paid out a record $34,360 to tipsters, recovered nearly $70,000 in stolen property and 21 weapons. CMPD officials called it “an historic year” for the program.

Holiday safety concerns from CMPD
The CMPD University City Division is reminding residents to call 704-432-3900 before leaving for the holidays. Residents may request a “Zone Check” to ensure that police officers will check on vacated homes while owners are away. CMPD would need your name, address, emergency contact info and the dates you will be gone. Also, a CMPD officer will be distributing Crime Stoppers information in the area of Tom Hunter Road and Canterwood Drive in northeast Charlotte Thursday morning in response to a rise in residential break-ins.

First Night Charlotte schedule of events
If you’re planning to party in uptown Charlotte on New Year’s Eve, check out this schedule of events for First Night Charlotte. Organizers released the full schedule Monday. As usual, festivities will begin with First Night Kids – this year from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. at NASCAR Hall of Fame, Outdoor terrace of Charlotte Convention Center, Bechtler Museum, Mint Museum, The Green, Gantt Center and the main stage at Levine Avenue of the Arts with a Kids countdown from 4-5 p.m. at the main stage.
