Attendance at the Gantt Center is running ahead of projections, the Charlotte Observer is reporting.

In its first year of operations, the center drew about 67,000 people, beating projections of 57,000, the newspaper reported, quoting estimates released Thursday by the Arts & Science Council and the museum.

Officials did not have a breakdown of paid vs. unpaid.

The Harvey B. Gantt Center for African American Arts + Culture opened Oct. 24, 2009, an outgrowth of the Afro-American Cultural Center founded in 1974.

The Bechtler Museum of Modern Art, which opened Jan. 2, also is running ahead of projections. Paid visitors totaled 39,000 through the end of October, putting it on track to top its estimate for the year of 44,000.

Meanwhile, attendance at the NASCAR Hall of Fame continues to be slower than projected.
