Gatorade honors Butler High School junior
Cierra Burdick, a 6-foot-2 junior guard at Butler High School, has been named Gatorade’s N.C. Girls Basketball Player of the Year.
The annual award recognizes not only athletic performance but academic excellence as well.
Burdick this season led the Bulldogs (25-4) to the Class 4A state tournament final, scheduled for March 13. Entering the championship game, she averaged 18.6 points, 10.2 rebounds, 3.4 assists, 2.4 steals and 1.6 blocks per game.
The Charlotte Observer named Burdick as one of its First Team All-Area selections. She also played on the USA Basketball Women’s U16 National Team last summer.
Off the court, Burdick has a 4.06 weighted GPA and is a member of the National Honor Society. She was lead
counselor at the school’s basketball camp and does volunteer work for several charities that benefit underprivileged children, including the U.S. Marine Corps Toys for Tots Foundation.
“Cierra Burdick is a phenom,” Butler Head Coach Stephanie Butler said in a statement. “She is an extremely hard worker and very competitive, both in the classroom and on the court. She is a student of the game, and she is viewed as a leader by her peers.”
Burdick has verbally committed to play basketball on scholarship at the University of Tennessee beginning in the fall of 2011.
