Georgia athletic director resigns after DUI arrest
Damon Evans resigned Monday as the University of Georgia’s athletic director less than a week after he was arrested on charges of DUI.
Evans, the first African American to hold that title at an SEC school, was arrested Wednesday.
Adding to the scandal was a police report detailing that a 28-year-old woman named Courtney Fuhrmann was in Evans' car at the time of his arrest and tried to influence the arresting officer. Evans, a 40-year-old married father of two children, was found with a "red pair of lady's panties between his legs," the report stated.
The school had given Evans a new contract in February that took effect Wednesday. He was awarded a $90,000 raise, making his annual salary $550,000.
Evans apologized to the school as well as to his wife.
"It had been my hope since taking the job in 2004 that I would have a long career at UGA," he was quoted as saying. "But because of a serious mistake in judgment, that won't be the case and I understand that I have a long road to rebuilding my reputation and career."
The school’s board of Trustees voted unanimously to accept Evans’ resignation and approved three months severance pay.
University President Michael Adams is expected to address Avans' resignation on Tuesday.
