Some residents in West Charlotte are letting out a sigh of relief now that the Beatties Ford Road Library has reopened after almost a year of being closed for renovations.

On Saturday, the Johnson C. Smith University football and women's basketball teams will celebrate the reopening by volunteering their time and spending their day greeting patrons and participating in activities such as group readings with youth from the community.

"This library has been a staple in the community, and we appreciate this opportunity to reconnect with our community," said head football coach Steven Aycock.

"Projects like these show our students and the community the importance of contributing and being involved in a different capacity other than sports," he said.

The newly renovated library has 5,700 additional square feet, including study booths and a game zone. A community meeting room and a new children's area featuring 18 computers were also added.

"We're excited about the reopening of the library, especially with the cutbacks that are taking place due to the economy," said head women's basketball coach Vanessa Taylor.

The Beatties Ford library is open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays; and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays. The branch is closed Tuesdays, Fridays and Sundays. The library is located at 2412 Beatties Ford Road, a short distance southeast of Interstate 85.
