Democratic U.S. Senate nominee Alvin Greene traveled by limo from his S.C. home to a Charlotte radio studio Monday, where he danced to a rap song about him and waltzed around questions about his military record, a pair of obscenity charges and issues with which he seemed unfamiliar.
In yet another episode of bizarre political theater, Greene appeared as guest of WBT AM (1110) and morning host Keith Larson.
Greene, who turns 33 on Tuesday, was trailed by a documentary crew from Los Angeles, which has followed him since his upset win in June’s Democratic primary.
Larson pressed Greene about his indictments this month on charges that he allegedly showed pornographic photos to a University of South Carolina student last year.
“There’s a process for it,” Greene said. “It’s overdue. It should have been dealt with.”
Asked if the charges were true, Greene said, “That’s all I have to say about it. …They’re trying to smear my campaign.”
Larson asked him about his “involuntary honorable” discharge from the U.S. Army.
“Sounds like a good compromise, a good deal,” Greene said without getting into specifics.
Even though many S.C. Democrats, including veteran U.S. Rep. Jim Clyburn, have distanced themselves from Greene, he said “Most of the leadership is coming around.”
Not quite all.
“I don't buy that,” said S.C. Democratic chair Carol Fowler. “I don’t think that most people think that our U.S. Senate candidate should be somebody who’s under indictment. If somehow he were tried and found innocent before the election, he might get a little more support.”
