According to a recent article in the Journal of Urban Health: Bulletin of the New York Academy of Medicine, teenagers are engaging in increasingly risky sexual behavior. One study found that 1 in 13 girls, aged 14 to 20, has had a group-sex experience—and not necessarily by choice. (Read more)

Man faces judge after setting woman on fire in elevator
Jerome Isaac is suspected to be the man shown in a surveillance video spraying a 73-year-old woman with gasoline and setting her on fire in a New York elevator. Isaac, 47, reportedly killed Delores Gillespie because she owed him $2,000 for doing some odd jobs for her. Isaac said nothing as he stood in court Monday with the left side of his face badly burned and peeling. He is being held without bail. (Read more)

Common cold and flu remedy linked with brain eating amoeba
Two people reportedly died in Louisiana after improperly using nasal-irrigation devices called neti pots. Their deaths are thought to be the result of using the devices with tap water instead of distilled or sterilized water. The tap water apparently contained “brain-eating amoebas” that entered their brains through their sinuses. (Read more)

Tiffany Rae Reid was raised by her Hungarian mother, and had no idea that her father was black because he wasn’t around and her mother lied about his race. When the truth was exposed, Reid says she struggled to deal with and find her racial identity. Was she black enough? Her experience motivated her to write “Color Blind — A Mixed Girl’s Perspective on Biracial Life.” She hopes the book will serve as a guide to help parents of biracial children understand the struggles they deal with.
