Groups chosen to lease 10 CMS buildings
The school board has released the names of nine community groups approved to lease vacant school buildings.
In an effort to reduce costs, the board announced in February that it would lease 11 schools slated for closure in the 2011-2012 school year because of low enrollment. Most of the schools are located in low-income areas.
The board announced that one of the schools -- Smith Middle – would be reprogrammed for district use.
The other schools, along with their respective tenants, are:
- Amay James Pre-Kindergarten Center – Brookstone Schools
- Double Oaks Pre-Kindergarten Center – Zechariah Alexander Senior Lodge
- Plaza Road Pre-Kindergarten Center – McColl Center for Visual Arts
- Tryon Hills Pre-Kindergarten Center – Bethlehem Center
- Pawtuckett Elementary – Access Family Services
- Davidson Middle – Lake Norman Christian School
- Wilson Middle – Student First Academy
- Midwood High – International House of Charlotte
- Former Sedgefield Elementary/Family Application Center – Q Foundation
- Former Wilmore Elementary/Professional Development Center – Barwick & Associates
CMS officials said the district had at least 60 potential tenants – at least two for every location. Winners were selected based on a range of criteria, including maximum revenue and benefit to the community and students.
By leasing the buildings, officials said, the district will save money on operating, maintaining and securing the facilities
