Gunfire in W. Charlotte leaves one man dead
A man apparently fleeing gunfire Thursday in west Charlotte was struck by a bullet and died at Carolinas Medical Center.
The victim was identified as 20-year-old Craig Allen Leverette.
According to an initial police report, investigators believe Leverette was walking near the intersection of Lewiston Avenue and Willard Street when someone opened fire. The shooting continued as Leverette proceeded along Willard Street, where he collapsed in a yard, fatally wounded.
The shooting was reported to police at 2:16 p.m.
Police said the killing was not a random act, and detectives were canvassing the area looking for potential witnesses. Police also used a helicopter and K-9 unit to search for the shooter.
