Hampton University President William Harvey and his wife, Norma, recently gave $166,000 of their own money to pay for staff raises.

According to published reports, the money will be used to ensure that no one working at the school earns less than $8 an hour. The minimum wage in Virginia is $7.25.

The donation will mean higher pay for about 118 university employees.

Harvey said in a statement: “While everyone at Hampton already receives more than the minimum wage, we wanted to show our gratitude to those staff members who serve the campus behind the scenes. These dedicated employees serve our faculty, administration and students and warrant our recognition.”

The donation marks the second time the couple has dipped into their own pockets to pay for staff raises. In May they announced a $1 million gift to raise salaries for instructional staff beginning in fall 2011.

VSU graduate lands NCAA internship

Curtis Walker, a Virginia State University graduate and former CIAA intern, was awarded an internship at the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) headquarters in Indianapolis.

He will be working in the Championships and Alliances Department.

Walker is one of 19 individuals selected out of the hundreds who applied. The purpose of the program is to provide on-the-job learning experiences for college graduates with an interest in pursuing a career in intercollegiate athletics administration.

“It is truly a blessing to be able to be given an opportunity to showcase the skills that my experiences have allowed me to obtain,” he said in a statement. “It is imperative that the years we spend in college aren’t wasted because each year that passes cannot be done over; therefore, it is essential to capitalize on every opportunity that may come.”
