Harriet Jinwright appeals her conviction
Lawyers for Harriet Jinwright on Friday filed their anticipated appeal of her May 3 conviction on charges related to tax evasion.
Jinwright’s financial status was listed on the document as “pauper,” meaning that for the second straight trial she will be given a court-appointed attorney.
Jinwright, 51, was convicted on four counts, including conspiracy and tax evasion.
She was sentenced Dec. 10 to nearly seven years in federal prison. She must serve at least 85 percent of that time, an official in the U.S. attorney’s office said.
Jinwright’s husband, Bishop Anthony Jinwright, is expected to appeal his conviction as well.
The 54-year-old pastor of Greater Salem Church in west Charlotte was sentenced to eight years and nine months in prison after a jury found him guilty on 13 counts of conspiracy, filing false tax returns and tax evasion.
An IRS agent testified at sentencing that the couple failed to report more than $2.3 million in income between 1991 and 2008.
In addition to prison, the Jinwrights were ordered to serve three years probation upon their release and to pay $1.2 million in taxes. Judge Frank Whitney also ordered Harriet Jinwright to repay the cost of her legal fees stemming from the first trial.
She was ordered to report to prison in April.
