Brandy/Aid to Haiti
The urgency of aid needed to help Haiti earthquake survivors has certainly been felt here in Charlotte. Some Qcity folks have taken on their civic duty to assist the relief efforts for our neighbors in Haiti.
Villa Heights Academic Center had its first Hats for Haiti Day on Fri., January 15. Students and faculty were allowed to wear hats during the school day in exchange of $1. “A parent and her company pledged to match $2 for every $1 raised.” said David Legrand, principal of Villa Heights Academic Center. The total contribution from the first Hat for Haiti Day, which took place on Jan. 22, was $1,335.00.
Topaz Woodfruff, a nail technician, at Nail Cabaret is having a Socks, Flip-flips, and Shoes Drive for Haiti. New or gently used items can be dropped off at the salon located at 4329 Monroe Road. The footwear will be given to the Red Cross. Topaz says donations will be collected through mid February.
April Atkinson, co-owner of Lockstar Salon (2132 McClintock Road) has a friend who resides in south Florida and is a friend of Wyclef Jean. After the earthquake Atkinson heard of the huge initiative in south Florida to help Haiti and decided to become a part of the effort. Lockstar Salon is now serving as a drop-off location for non-perishable items to be donated to Wyclef Jean’s YELE foundation. Atkinson is asking for donors to give canned goods, blankets, first-aid kits, flashlights, batteries, and toiletries. YELE is arranging shipment and will be dispersing all goods raised. Lockstar Salon business hours are: Tuesday –Friday, 9-7 and Saturday, 9-3. The first shipment left for Haiti on Wed. Jan 13.
