Hit-and-run driver turns himself in
A man responsible for a hit-and-run death on Brookshire Boulevard early Sunday has surrendered to police.
James Edward Johnson, 44, turned himself in to detectives with the Major Crash Investigation Unit Monday night. He was booked into the Mecklenburg jail on charges of felony hit-and-run resulting in death. Bail was set at $50,000.
According to police, Johnson confessed to driving a two-tone Ford F-150 pickup that struck George Lee Calebro, a 68-year-old pedestrian, around 5:19 a.m. Sunday along Brookshire Boulevard near Interstate 85. The truck continued outbound along Brookshire Boulevard until it turned left onto S. Hoskins Road.
Calebro died at the scene.
Earlier Monday, police released a grainy image of the suspect vehicle, apparently taken by a traffic camera, and asked for the public’s help in locating it.
Calebro’s death marked the second time in less than a week and at least the third time this year that a pedestrian has been killed along that part of Brookshire Boulevard and the Brookshire Freeway.
