Hollywood veteran talks of helping others
“God Is Trying to Tell You Something,” the famous song from the movie “The Color Purple,” changed the life of Maria Howell, who was featured as the choir soloist 25 years ago.
To this day, fans young and old remember the petite woman with the powerful voice. Now Howell uses her Hollywood status to steer young girls in the right direction.
On the next episode of “GoodWorks with Rahman Khan,” Howell talks about how she turned a minor singing role into a long-lasting career. She was most recently featured in the hit film “The Blind Side.
Howell is also a businesswoman with a philanthropic spirit.
Khan also chats with author Sherre DeMao, who wrote the book “Me, Myself, & Inc.” DeMao shares how she believes people can balance work and life without feeling overwhelmed.
On her website, DeMao says she began incorporating this synergy into her own life. Her book is filled with suggestions on ways to achieve one’s dreams without making a lot of sacrifices.
Finally, Khan chats with Hollywood actor and former fashion model Boris Kodjoe, who opens up about raising a daughter with Spina Bifida, and the charitable organization he founded that bears her name. Sophie’s Voice Foundation supports family outreach programs for those dealing with the birth defect. Also, Kodjoe talks about how his daughter’s battle with the birth defect has changed his life.
“GoodWorks with Rahman Khan” is a weekly show that highlights the “goodworks” in all us, whether its corporations, celebrities or just everyday people making the positive changes in the community. The show airs every Sunday at 12 p.m. on the local PBS affiliate WTVI Channel 42.
