Hospital apologizes for accidentally killing man with lethal injection

Good morning Qcity! It’s another manic Monday. How was your weekend? Today the weatherman is calling for sunshine and highs in the mid 70s. Tonight expect a few showers, areas of patchy fog and lows in the mid 50s.
Here’s what’s brewing in the news:
Hospital apologizes for accidentally killing man with lethal injection
In July 2010, Richard Smith, 79, came to Miami’s North Shore Medical Center complaining of
stomach pain and trouble breathing. The Florida man’s attending nurse injected him with Pancuronium, the same drug used to execute death row inmates. Apparently the nurse grabbed the drug by mistake and meant to inject Smith with and over-the-counter drug, antacid Pepcid.
After being injected with the Pancuronium he went into respiratory arrest and was revived, but died a month later. His family has since filed a lawsuit.
The hospital has since released a statement apologizing for the incident, saying they have conducted an internal review and now has “several new processes in place to ensure a situation like this doesn’t happen again.” The nurse who injected Smith with the wrong drug was fined and underwent some additional training. She is reportedly still working in the intensive care unit.

‘Al-Qaeda sympathizer’ nabbed, accused of NYC bomb plots
Jose Pimentel, 27, was arrested in New York City and arraigned Sunday on numerous
terrorism-related charges. He is accused of plotting to bomb police and post offices, as well as U.S. troops returning home. The Manhattan man was described by Mayor Michael Bloomberg as and “al-Qaeda sympathizer” who was motivated by terrorist propaganda and resentment of U.S. troops in Afghanistan and Iraq. Police say Pimentel was ready to carry out his plan and that at the time of his arrest, he was putting the bomb together and drilling holes in it.

Cost of raising a child in now $226,920
According to the United States Department of Agriculture, it costs more than ever to raise a child. According a recently released report, a middle-income American family can expect to spend $226,920 on food, shelter and other things a child needs to survive until the age of 18. This is a two percent increase over the value calculated back in 2009. Transportation and child care were the greatest factors driving the cost increase. With the state of economy and the number of adults returning home or still looking to mom and dad for additional support, some parents can expect to pay more - doling out at least $100,000 more per child after they reach adulthood.
