Hugh Hattabaugh named interim CMS superintendent
The school board Tuesday night named Hugh Hattabaugh, chief operating officer, interim superintendent to replace Peter Gorman, who resigned June 8.

Hattabaugh has been chief operating officer for Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools since October 2008. He came to the district as an area superintendent for the North Learning Community in July 2007 from Little Rock, Ark., where he had been a deputy superintendent.
“It is an honor to serve Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools during this important transition period,” Hattabaugh said. “I look forward to working with the Board, the staff and our students and families during the 2011-2012 school year to keep CMS on its trajectory of significant reform and improvement.”
Under the terms of his interim contract, Hattabaugh will begin his new role on July 1 and will serve as interim through July 1, 2012. He will be paid a base salary of $190,000. He is also eligible for a lump-sum payment of $35,000 at the end of his interim term.
Gorman, who resigned to take a job in the private sector, will be paid by through Aug. 1 and will assist in Hattabaugh’s transition.
Hattabaugh is a native of Salem, Ind., and began his educational career in Muncie, Ind., where he taught science and coached at North Del Middle School before returning to Salem to teach biology and coach football, basketball and track at Salem High School.
In 1986, he accepted a teaching job in Orlando, Fla., first teaching science and then becoming an administrative dean at Meadowbrook Middle School in Orange County. He later became an assistant principal, then a principal in Orange County schools.
Hattabaugh holds a bachelor’s degree in biology with a minor in health education from Ball State University. In 1976, he completed his master’s degree in secondary education at Indiana University in Bloomington.
He is married with two grown daughters and four grandchildren.
