This weekend, join hundreds of people who are coming together in celebration of a day of good deeds in the local community. Sunday will mark the 14th annual Temple Beth El Mitzvah Day- a day devoted to social justice and action.

The day begins with breakfast, songs and prayer. Afterwards, volunteers will disperse in teams to embark on community service projects which include painting, gardening, reading, crafting and working with children.

Several projects will take place at Sterling Elementary School, which Temple Beth El has “adopted.” The first project involves sprucing up the school’s gym, library, and art room in preparation for next year.

Summer fun packs will also be assembled for students at the school. Inside each pack every student at Sterling will receive a grade level appropriate book, a snack, activities, pencils, and a toy to take home for the summer.

Some volunteers will help out in the teacher work room assembling games and preparing class activity sets.

Classroom Central, an organization that provides school supplies to students living in poverty, will also receive some assistance. Volunteers will help organize the donation storage area, stock the shelves, and are also encouraged to donate items. See website for supply needs.

Another interesting new project is Gardens for Grandparents through Mecklenburg County Department of Social Services. Several elderly residents will have a "yard lift." This gives younger folks a chance to interact with seniors and share a love of gardens, outdoors and living things.

There are several other projects, including some that will benefit victims of domestic violence. Complete details can be found at www.beth-el.com.
