Charlotte-Mecklenburg police are investigating a case of suspected child abuse that left a 6-month-old in critical condition.

Officers were called to the Levine Children’s Hospital at Carolinas Medical Center Friday evening after medical staff reported what they suspected to be a case of child abuse. Police in their report gave few details about the extent of the child’s injuries but said the infant was unresponsive.

Detectives interviewed the child’s mother and her boyfriend, Juan Sabastian Vega, 23 (insert), and later charged him with felony child abuse. Police said Vega is not the child’s father.

Police reported the incident and arrest just before midnight Saturday.
