After a first–round bye, the JCSU women’s team will play Chowan tonight at 9 p.m. in the quarterfinals of the CIAA tournament

Chowan earned a spot in the second round Monday after erasing a 19-point deficit to eliminate the Lady Blue Bears of Livingston 56-53.

“The main thing was, we just didn’t want to go home,” Talaya Lynch, who led Hawks with 17 points, said after the game.

At 21-3, the JCSU team has the best record in the CIAA and easily won the Southern Division title. JCSU beat Chowan 57-54 in their only regular-season matchup.

Other Monday Games

ST. AUGUSTINE'S 69, VIRGINIA UNION 53: Senior guard Crystal McCaffity scored 14 points on 5-for-6 shooting, including a perfect 4-for-4 from the three-point line, to help her team eliminate Virginia Union. Freshman forward Umeka Benson, the CIAA rookie of the year, added 13 points and 13 rebounds. The Charlotte native came off the bench and was named MVP.

The victory sends the Lady Falcons (18-10 overall) to today’s quarterfinal round, where they will face Elizabeth City State, the top Northern Division seed. Game time is 7 p.m.

VIRGINIA STATE 65, FAYETTEVILLE STATE 44: There will be no repeat for the Lady Broncos. The defending CIAA women’s champions went down to defeat in the opening round Monday. Led by All-CIAA selection Rhon’Neshia Taylor (20 points, 10 rebounds and four assists) the Lady Trojans got a measure of redemption against the team that had beaten them in last year’s semifinals.

Virginia State will play Shaw University today at 3 p.m.

SHAW 95, LINCOLN 63: The inside trio of Demaria Liles, Kyria Buford and Aslea Williams combined to score over half of Shaw's points.

“It felt good to get our feet wet and get that first win,” Shaw Head Coach Jacques Curtis said.

Liles, a 6-1 senior forward, led the Lady Bears (18-11 overall) with 21 points on 9 of 11 shooting and snatched 12 rebounds. Buford, a 6-1 junior forward, added 20 points and Williams, a 6-1 junior center, added 15 points for the Lady Bears, the No. 2 seed in the Southern Division.

The Lady Bears play Virginia State today at 3 p.m.

WINSTON-SALEM STATE 66, ST. PAUL’S 33: Jasmine Newkirk scored 14 of her game-high 15 points in the first half. The victory sets up a key matchup today when the Rams (17-10 and No. 3 in the Southern Division) face Bowie State (17-9 and No. 2 in the North). Bowie State received a first-round bye. Tipoff is scheduled for 5 p.m.

“I’m more than excited and very much looking forward to what we can do against a very good Bowie State squad,” said Winston-Salem State coach Stephen Joyner Jr.
